On Maundy Thursday, Christians commemorate the Last Supper that Jesus had with his disciples before his crucifixion. During this meal, Jesus instituted Holy Communion, offering bread as his body and wine as his blood, a practice that continues in Christian worship today. He also performed the washing of his disciples’ feet, a powerful act of humility and service, teaching them to love and serve one another.
The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning “command,” referring to Jesus’ commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you.” We join together in the Sanctuary at 7pm to partake in that holy meal with our first communicants, hear his prayers from the garden and experience the stripping of the altar at the end, symbolizing Jesus being taken away to be crucified.
